Now help me if you can, remember I keep saying I'm "the dummie".Does that constitute "boots-on-ground" or not? Aren't deck logs considered "the Bible"?

The first time I was in the bay of DaNang and its harbor, the deck log contains an error! It missed the latitude by a whole degree! We were crusing all over the harbor in the deep water areas, but the deck log shows clearly we were on land!

I wonder what the DVA would say about a heavy cruiser being in country?

I guess you could say the ship went aground!

Dear DVA,

What do you say about a ship hitting land? Do I have a story to tell you!

Wally

Mel Here, RD1 LPO OI Division, USS Cavalier(APA-37), 1966, Chu Lai, VN Anchored(Less than 3 NM off Coast, off load of 240 Marines and their Combat Cargo over a 6 day period in Feb-March time frame.

We had one Marine Captain assigned to be a Member of the Ship's Crew during our West Pac Cruise. He was attached as the Marine Corp "Combat Cargo Liasion Officer". This Marine Captain had a Great Sense of Humor. The Day After We arrived in Chu Lai, he personally passed a Now Hear This to the Ship's Crew on the Bitch Box. Many of You Sailors Are Not Being Given an Oppontunity to go Ashore, so the Marines have bought Shore to You. We have set up Vietnam For All of You to Step Ashore Upon. Location, bah, bah, We had a Line of Sailors laughing and cutting up in line to step upon a large Bucket of Vietnam Soil. At least half the crew or more did so over a 2 hour period. That That Was "Boots on the Ground". Hey, Guys, that was almost as good as a passenger coming out of Thailand enroute to Clark AB with a 15 minute stop and go on a Runaway at today's Ho Chi Mein City. However, to my knowledge, no ship crew ever put in a claim based on buddy statements that he had stepped upon Vietnam Soil based on that Marine Captain's Sense of Humor.

Never Forget, the purpose was to save money, by deleting the Part the US Navy Played In the Vietnam War by cutting out more than a half million Sailors from ever serving "In Vietnam". Remember you sailors are "Vietnam Era" Veterans NOT Vietnam Veterans. Your Combat Pay that you drew never happened.

I personally feel that we will be recognized and payed our due benefits when our numbers have died down to the last few thousands left, say in about 20 years.

7th Fleet Tin Can and Amphib Sailor, 3 WestPac Cruises, 4 ships, 9 years before the Mast(Remember the book written prior to 1850, "Two Years Beore the Mast" Life of a typical US Navy Sailor which bought on a Reform of the Treatment of the average sailor at sea) I am very Proud of Have Served In the US Navy. from 1957 to 1966.

Should Address Our Other Brothers/Sisters In Arms who also were a Major Part of the Vietnam War and Agent Orange. Thailand, Cambodia and Laos. The TLC Vets were left out also. Thai Bases Were Sprayed with Agent Orange on their Boundaries with this information well documented. They too, along with Guam, where Agent Orange was stored and used, along with other bases, were left out except for "Direct Proven Exposure" Cases. Vets here, IMHO, were not treated equally, yet all contributed to the Vietnam War Effort.
