Thomas Jefferson Quotes

Postby m.and.m » Sat Feb 13, 2010 4:19 am

Thomas Jefferson was a remarkable individual and had tremendous insight about government. I think this board will find that he has pretty much nailed what has finally happened with our government today and will certainly give you plenty of food for thought. I'll try and post a new one every day....

Experience hath shewn, that even under the best forms of government, those entrusted with power have, in time, and by slow operations, perverted it into tyranny.

Of all the Presidents, Andrew Jackson was on the side of the people more than any other. He truly understood the role of government, believed in term limits, and was extremely patriotic. He also seemed "pained" by public office and served reluctantly, but with a lot of dedication and competence. Here's a quote that I think is particularly appropriate today

"I weep for the liberty of my country when I see at this early day of its successful experiment that corruption has been imputed to many members of the House of Representatives, and the rights of the people have been bartered for promises of office".

I think this quote makes it much easier to decide who to vote for:

"If the present Congress errs in too much talking, how can it be otherwise in a body to which the people send one hundred and fifty lawyers, whose trade it is to question everything, yield nothing, and talk by the hour"
Thomas Jefferson

Just by eliminating lawyers, the quality of the congress should improve exponentially.

I think like most people of Cherokee ancestry ol' Andy Jackson is the worst president we have ever had. The Trail of Tears is as bad as the Nazi attempt to eradicate the Jews. Indian People in Tennessee, Georgia, Carolina, Kentucky, Mississippi and Ohio were driven out of their homes and marched at gunpoint many miles to disease infested concentration camps. Thousands died along the way. Jackson was ordered by The Supreme Court of The United States to cease and desist Jackson basically told Chief Justice Marshall to stick it up his ass. That was the beginning of the President and his cronies making end runs around and interpreting the Law to suit themselves. It's been going on ever since. The result is scumbag outfits like the DVA and the BIA. As far as I am concerned the Cherokee, Creek, Choctaw, Chickasaw, Seminole, Shawnee and Yamasee people would been better off if Chief Junaluska, had let the Creeks kill him at Horseshoe Bend.

I apologize for striking a nerve, however, I felt like I was lead into an ambush because of the way, you simply asked of my opinion about Andrew Jackson in your first response to my Jefferson quote.

When I posted the first quote from Jefferson, I was wanting to highlight words they said, as being indicative of todays legislators and government. I was not trying to hold any of them up as shining examples of heroes or bad guys. It's just quotes.

I'll continue to post because I believe a have a right in an open forum to do so. If you feel that you are going to be offended by the quotes I choose, please feel free to ignore the thread. Thanks in advance for your understanding.

Max Lighten up, my first response to this thread was made as a joke,
I didn't ambush you or anyone else and I took no offense to the quotes. I have no problem with Jefferson, I think he was a great man; the point I was trying to make was Jackson is part of the problem. By ignoring the Supreme Court he established a precedent that Presidents aren't accountable to the other branches of government. This travesty has been repeated time after time; A president can do damn near anything he wants, just look at FDR and Johnson. This is not the way that Madison and Jefferson envisioned it. It has gotten so bad that the President and the Congress has little or no respect for the Constitution. This attitude has led to the Piss Poor departments that I referenced and there are many more. If we were operating like the Constitution says that we are supposed to operate this country wouldn't be broke and going down the tubes.

Certainly, the last thing I wanted to do was offend anyone on this board. I'm glad to know that you really did not take offense.
That's the problem with text vs. actually talking to someone face-to-face, you can't see facial expressions, body language, etc. which provide important visual cues at to the other person's true feelings.

I believe it was Hoover who was noted as a man of few words. On one occasion a very verbal female columnist was to be seated at the dinner table next to the President and her friends made a wager with her that she wouldn't get more than two words out of him. After trying throughout the dinner she finally fessed up and said "Mr President, several of my friends and I made a wager that I couldn't get more than two words out of you, what say you? Sitting silently for about 10 seconds the president turned to her and simply said ... "You lose!".

Max,
No offense taken; it wasn't my intention to offend you either. We get into some lively discussion on this board but rarely get into arguments. What you said about talking via text is very true. it's not like talking to someone face to face.
