1,200 veterans wrongly told they got fatal disease

CHARLESTON, W.Va. (AP) - At least 1,200 veterans across the country have been mistakenly told by the Veterans Administration that they suffer from a fatal neurological disease.

One of the leaders of a Gulf War veterans group says panicked veterans from Alabama, Florida, Kansas, North Carolina, West Virginia and Wyoming have contacted the group about the error.

Denise Nichols, the vice president of the National Gulf War Resource Center, says the VA is blaming a coding error for the mistake.

Letters dated Aug. 12 were intended to notify veterans who have Lou Gehrig’s disease of disability benefits available to them.

Calls to the VA were not immediately returned Monday.

Lou Gehrig’s disease, or ALS, is a rapidly progressive disease that attacks the nerve cells responsible for controlling voluntary muscles.

 So once again the VA screws up and Veterans suffer

You know Dave, I've said [and many others have also] the whole problem comes down to accountability. Ninety percent of all the delays, misinformation, incompetence would end if someone were to be held responsible for their actions. The VA makes it's own rules, sets it own pace, CHANGES it's own rules, and answers to NO one.

I go to the VA hospital about twice a month, no guards, no metal detectors, no x-rays; just walk right in.... I go to the Regional Office and they have everything, just short of a strip search. I wonder why? Actually I am glad they have it because I don't think I would like prison life very much and I'm damned tired of all the sh*t they have been pulling.

What bothers me is that when Susie told me about this letter, I got worried if Carl got one I am afraid it would be devestating. His mother died of ALS and it is not a pretty way to die. They should be cited for such crap. Or made to walk the plank.

Keel hauling might be a better punishment.

Only problem with that, Bear, is that Zero's doing his best to reduce the numbers of keels we have to haul with.

Yep, and those new Super carriers haven't been in the water long enough to develop many barnacles yet. :P
