I served aboard the Dirt "D" USS DiamondHead AE 19 (1967 - 1968) as a BM3. Most of our time was spent supplying ammunition to DD;PG, LSM, light cruises and DE from I Corps to IV Corps. We did spent some time up at Yankee station and supplied the Carriers. If you were abroad any of these ships we probably received some ammo from us.

Hi Jtex ,
Where did you pick up the ammo ? Ever pick it up from warehouses in Viet Nam ? And did your boat ever off load drinking water from Viet Nam to the fleet ? Being a BM3 you would know , we're curious here.
Glad to have you here.

Welcome aboard!! I know you supplied the Forrestal. We resupplied from you the night before the fire. The ole man was pissed when all that WWII and Korean ordinance started coming aboard. bill

Bill I remember rearming the Forrestal and the tragic fire right after that. We felt so bad because it was our ammunition that was going off on the Forrestal. We supplied fire equipment to fight the fire on the Forrestal also. Our far east cruise was dedicated to the Forrestal and all those brave sailors who died that day. We also had a fire on the USS Diamondhead and it was real scary trying to put it out. You definitely don't want a fire on a ammunition ship. If we had gone off we would have wiped everything around for two to three miles or more. You can blame the old ammunition being supplied to your government that had it laying around for years so it had to be used up.

I know how you feel, but we never blamed your ship for the old ordinance. It was a cost shaving measure by the Navy. Did they continue to supply the fleet with old ordinance after the Forrrestal mishap? bill

Bill As far as I know they continued using old ordance, (ammunition) until it was depleted. It was a bummer working with that old ordance you had to be very carefully with it. The fire on our ship was if I remember right and old flare or phosphorus that went off. Likely we kept stuff like that separated from the other ordance. We had a hard time trying to put it out. Finally we put it over the side into the ocean.
