A poll to find out how or if BWN users use chat like AIM, Yahoo, etc.

When I want to chat, I just use the app. in MSIE. Works just fine.

Don't have or use Instant Messaging software.

OK, that one needs some explanation.... and what if we use Firefox (or Foxfire or whatever)?

He's talking about Micro Soft Internet Explorer, which by it's self, doesn't have a "Chat Client". Microsoft uses Microsoft Messenger, which is all tangled up with Microsoft's other applications.

John, given the other issues with the board, we should just bite the bullet and get another more modern chat application.

If you'll give me the appropriate access, I will interface with our host and get it done, assuming there are no extreme costs.

Regarding using Firefox, their "chat" is integrated with Gmail. Once again we have another application that is outside our board. People just won't use it, if they have to go somewhere else..

I will do this, John....Just give me a contact within our host, and I will make sure that the application gets installed and debugged if needed.

Waiting for you....

Max

There are several mods available for phpBB3+, some below are free, and some are reasonably priced.

This one is $200.00 for 50 users, higher as more users are included.

Hi Dak,
Only problem is...we're running phbb2 still. I'm pretty sure that we would have to do an upgrade to phbb3 along with the subsequent migration of our member data. I haven't checked pricing on a chat client for phbb3.

I've talked to the people at Flash Chat and quite frankly, they weren't very helpful. The software requires a dedicated server, which I don't believe we have. They offered to host our chat on their servers for $30.00 a month. I don't know if our current budget can accommodate even that seemingly small amount.

Perhaps, if we get our tax exempt status, we can get some money in the coffers via grants and other fund raising vehicles. When that happens, would could get some I.T. assistance to help us update the entire site.

You sure about the version 2 Max? The overall look, control panel & etc. is the same as the forum I have on my family site. I had phpBB2 on a site several years ago and it looked completely different and the user controls were also different.

In any case, there are chat mods available for phpBB2 as well.

Hmmmm, I can edit this thread and post while there are a number of others I cannot edit.

That's what JR shared with me. You'd have to ask him for precise details.

Max

I'm aware of the pbbb2 chat application.

Do not change the board... last time it was horrible. What are the problems with the board???

I want to remind all you savvy tech guys, there are some who are not able to do all the techy things and the board seems to be nice and stable now. As to the formating, I use the buttons above to do the work for me. I do not write code and do not want to learn.

JR, Unless there is an update through your host I'd leave it at 3.0.4 regardless of the problems with the board. I tried the update to 3.0.6 and though things looked like they went OK the ability to log in as administrator got hosed. I'm now at 3.0.5 and things seem to be running smoothly.

Here's a pic of a test page with some of the mods I have installed. The sign and thought balloon text is editable. The button is a hyper link and the youtube thing is a custom frame.

Remember the disappearing posts? Also, I still cannot edit some of my posts and have a fairly consistent problem with an error message when submitting a post.

Oh, there's a cool mod that allows embedding of a pdf document into a post.

Code: Select all
Author: Skeleton
Description: With the PDF BBCode you can embed PDF documents.

BBCode:

Code: Select all
    [pdfview]{URL}[/pdfview]

HTML:

Code: Select all
    <iframe src="http://docs.google.com/gview?url={URL}&embedded=true" style="width:600px; height:500px;" frameborder="0"></iframe>

Helpline:

Code: Select all
    pdfview: [pdfview]Enter url of pdf[/pdfview]

Example:

Code: Select all
    [pdfview]http://www.photoshoprevealed.com/Discovering-Photoshop-1.pdf[/pdfview]

Bill, am not sure why the posts don't edit...all of mine do if I need them to. Don't remember the the "disappearing" posts except there was a time when a post didn't show up and then later appeared several times. Don't think the problems outweight the advantges at the time.

Oh, I agree Marcie. The problems are an annoyance for sure but not enough of an issue to really matter in the overall context of things.

The editing issue, or lack of, for me has been from the gitgo while the error on submitting some posts has only been around, for me, about 6 months and it may well be the disappearing posts was a server issue. I seem to recall there were some server problems a while back.

NOTE! I can edit this post but not my post about 9 posts above. Now, it may be a board setting for editing time too but I've seen quite a number of posts that I could not edit at any time.
