Real Time Chat

Postby m.and.m » Sun Feb 07, 2010 6:07 pm

I think a real time chat function would be a nice addition to the board. The message and email function on here is great but when there are several members online, it would me nice (I think, anyway) to chat with them in real time. Here's a poll to see what people think....

We had a link to something a couple of years back that had some potential to it but never happened. I myself have about 3 different IM capabilities, such as Windows Messenger, AIM, and Yahoo. On your profiles you can show what you have if you want to list them and have access to what is available. Windows messenger is pretty easy for most folks with the exception of Frank, and we all know what the problem is there. I am hooked up with a few on the board and we chit chat back and forth a bit, but it all depends what IM service you have. Rather than build a chat service in, use what you already have and see what others have and try to hook up with them.

I'm for it, Max.

Thanks for the response, Ex!

I've got all all those other apps too, but I never open them. At this point, I am interested in talking shipmates about some serious (and not so serious) stuff. I just thought if it were easy and right here, more people would use it...

Max, (Not so) Little Miss ExIntrepid roped me into IM'ing a few years ago, but after a while it just got to be a pain, so I just quit using 'em.

Everybody thinks I'm some kind of Luddite — Anti-Technology person because I just have 1 copper land line; no cell phones, pagers, palm-pilots, etc. This is with them not knowing I wrote some of the original X-25 packet-switching software. Hell, I was on Dial-up until just last year, when Mrs. ExIntrepid got mortally tired of waiting for eBay to update pages.

So now I got half-speed DSL (1.5mbps), and satellite TV, but I draw the line a cell-phones. The way I see it, if someone want's me bad enough, they'll keep calling or leave a message. Otherwise, I ain't interested.

Probably comes from being on-call programmer/Systems guy for 20 years.

But I'd like a chatroom or IRC adaption to this board, just for when I can't sleep and want to pontificate to fellow shipmates.

Besides, I got to keep up my curmudgenly attitude, don't 'cha know...

PS - I see I'm going back to my naturally loquatious self, again. That didn't last long...

I've got an application called Comodo Easy VPN. It creates a Virtual Private Network, so you don't have to worry about the "bots" that come with Yahoo, IRC, AIM, etc. I've been looking for someone to test it out with me. Are you game?
