How do I edit a posting?

PostPosted: Thu Apr 15, 2010 6:05 am

I am looking for a way to edit one of my postings I created.

I am just missing something? Normally I have the option (a button with the word Edit) to edit just my messages.

Thanks

Hey Gordie, Long time no type...

When you read your post there should be a oblong button in the group labeled 'Edit" next in the group with the 'Quote' button.

I've never had a problem, though I seldom 'edit' anything...

Later: See, works perfectly...

Gordy, the forum installation is borked. Most times I cannot edit a posting but sometimes I can and I have not been able to determine what's going on. I originally thought it may be a timing setting, something that can be done in phpBB but if there's a time limit it should allow an edit for a hour, or what ever time is set. Or, any time editing with, I think a zero in the setting box.
Then I thought it might something to do with whether or not you started the thread but that doesn't seem to make a difference either so, it seems some can and some can't edit posts some or all of the time.
Darned annoying.

I don't know why some folks have trouble editing and others don't....ghosts in the machine ???? I know JR and I have both checked settings and things seem ok...but will see if he can check it again.

Perhaps an upgrade to phpbb (http://www.phpbb.com/downloads/olympus.php) would fix some of the quirks with this board. But we will leave that decision up to JR.

Marcie, I do note that when posting or the occasional edit, if I write too long it won't post the first time... (Actually, I usually 'Preview' it first. Seems like if I take more than 5 minutes to do something it'll give me a red message.

All I do is hit the 'preview' or 'submit' button again and everything's hunky-dory.

On the other hand; I'm running Win98 SE and many-times-patched IE-6, so it's probably too stupid to screw up the board software...

Later: Ok I just checked—If I take more than 5 min. to Preview or Submit I get a message:

The submitted form was invalid. Try submitting again.

So I do, and it takes it just fine.

Exie, I don't know if you remember when I had those problems so now I go to word and type it out and I can spell check and proof read and then print it out and submit to the board. That way I can take as long as I need and think things out before I shoot off my mouth. Dale

An upgrade may or may not fix the problems. The upgrade should leave settings as is and if that's where the problems are they will remain. If the posting error and editing errors are not due to settings, rather a program corruption, the problems should be resolved.
The board is already phpBB3+ and I can say from experience that if the board was installed via the host's installer whether Fantastico or another, upgrading from an outside source, including phpBB, is going to cause problems. My personal board is currently 3.0.6 and the last time I checked 3.0.7 was available but there were enough issues upgrading from 3.0.4 to 3.0.5 that I ended up deleting the board and reinstalling. While the board did function the administration area was completely borked. Upgrading from 3.0.5 to 3.0.6 when it became available via Fantistico it was a smooth operation.

I know this upgrade situation was discussed several months ago but don't think anything was done at the time.

Bill

ADD! Amazing. I can edit on this thread.

That is certainly an issue but I have not noticed it being related to a time factor in my case. I've received that error with simple, less than ten word replies and on up.

I use to have a problem with editing if my post was a long one. The way I solved the problem is by composing my post in Microsoft Word, review it, make edits, then copy it and Post it on this Web Site. May not be the best fix but it works for me. But I often get the message invalid post/submission. When this happens I just hit the submission button again and the post is submitted. Sometimes I cannot find a Post that I made. When this happens I just go back to Microsoft Word where I saved it as a file and RePost(don't think that is a word). But sometimes your first draft is your best and the edit process just mask your true feelings... Why save yourself from em bare ass ment over a few misplaced words. Of course this post I just entered it right to the board cause I have no intention of editing it no matter how bad I goof if up...
