FaceBook/MyLife

Postby Ken Hummel » Fri Dec 11, 2009 8:18 pm

For everyones information, as I was at my VSO's yesterday, I found out that the MYLife site that is connected to Facebook has magically found it's way into my address book on my computer. Apparently, I sent a request to my VSO requesting them to become one of my friends which I did not do, but I thought I would post this to let you all know that if you are connected with this site, it may be sending messages to folks without you knowing about and might create problems in the future.

I have my privacy settings to just friends and I do not do any of the applications/games etc. Thats where they get your info..once you get into the games and someone sends you something and you accept, the application opens your info up for those sites. Be sure you have your settings privatized and don't post too much private info on profile.

Thanks Marcie, I never have really used it so I haven't spent much time on it, and I think I only responded to it from a family member. It sure is frustrating when there has to be people in this world that have to try and make other people miserable for their satisfaction, greed, or antagonisim.

I have about 20+ friends on Facebook,,, several who are members here.

You have to be careful about the apps, as one of them, an IQ test, I think it was, which requires your cell # to get reults.. come to find out,, you are signing up for their, whatever it is, and on my next phone bill, I had an additional 30 dollars added to it... then you have to send a text message to them, to shut it down.. but you still have to pay that bill... guess I should have paid closer attention. LOL

Now there is something called "Farmville" and "yoville" apps,,, where you plow a field, plant your crops, harvest your crops, take to market, replow, replant, re harvest, etc...
What a waste of time.. I did it, just to humor a few of my friends,, jeesh,, I want that 1/2 hour of my life back..

I dont use Facebook that much.. Ive been on there more last night, and this morning, than I ever have,, same with MySpace...

I guess I just prefer forums better,,, read, comment, reply, and move on,, post if you want to, or not.. without all the silly games (apps) that go along with them.. Even my blog, gets to be a pain in the butt sometimes,, I wonder if I should have even started it....

Sry about your problems, Ken,, not sure how to remove them, but good luck with that (I almost added that app last night, "My Life"

Papaw, I know what you mean about watching what you get involved in online; I've been working with computers since '73, (way before AlGore invented the internet. Actually, I was working on it, specifically with X-25 packet switching and backbone configurations, when Al baby was going to divinity school!) but I digress...

As a rule, I seldom get involved with social networking sites, especially since they began using them to generate income. Places like the BWN, or Free Republic Forums are the main reason it was invented. Once it started to go commercial in a big way you have to pay attention to the site use disclaimers, which are like reading the really small print in an automobile add.

As for time sinks, I'd hate to tell you how much time I spent in SimCity (Not the Sims!) or even worse, RailRoad Tycoon!

Sometime in the early 70's, I built my first computer, a Sinclair that used toggle switches for input, instantly making me a programmer. Sometime around 1980, the Z80 came into use and a wonderful program called Modem 7. I could transfer data! CPM, DOS, Machine Language, Fortran - gather data - then the INTERNET!!!!!!!!!!!!!! GATHER LOTS OF DATA!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Not being a farmer by trade (although my family's still got a bunch of farms in Appling Co. Georgia) maybe you should consider a lease to the Archer-Daniels-Midland app. Then you could just lie around and watch the machines do the job for you...
