Decorated Veterans Rock

Postby daklander » Fri Aug 21, 2009 4:25 pm

Marcie asked me to post the pictures but a slide show does better so I uploaded to my photobucket site so you can see a slide show of the scene.
Marcie, If you would rather, I can, and will, post the photos as well.

There is a huge rock near a gravel pit on Hwy.25 in rural Iowa..
For generations, kids have painted slogans, names, and obscenities on
this rock, changing its character many times. A few months back, the rock
received its latest paint job, and since then it has been left completely
undisturbed.
It's quite an impressive sight. Be sure to scroll down and check out the
multiple photos. (all angles) of the rock.
I thought the flag was draped over the rock, but it's not. It's
actually painted on the rock too.

The artist:
Ray
'Bubba' Sorensen.

Watch the slide show.

He has been repainting that Rock every year with another message. If you ever go across Intersate 80 through Iowa, it is only a few miles north of the Interstate if you want to vist it. He has done some amazing works on this rock.

Here is another link that will allow you to see all of his works over the past few years, this boy has talent.

Outstanding.

Dak, I think your pictures are even brighter and clearer than the boy's own site. I really liked them, and the way you did the slideshow.

The Brilliant and Beautiful Mrs. ExIntrepid has a little side business with silver jewelry and paintings that brings her into contact the artistic community here in Miami, especially on South Beach. For years now, I've been tickeled watching them; they break down generally into two groups:

A large, radically liberal, 'fine' art-y types. Long-haired types in sandals/flipflops who do 'non-representational' art thal looks like it was done by a 2-year-old with an bad astigmatism. They make money by selling their crap to local, state, and if they're really, really stupid looking, they sell to the federal government, sucking up the 'National support of the Arts' grants.

The other is a very small group of buzz-cut, combat-booted, conservative types who do photo-realistic oils and acrilics, or work with those icky smelters and monatary metals, who are referred to as 'commercial' artists.

(Note: to the arty-leftist types, 'commercial' is the worst thing you can be.)

The Arty-Leftist types would say that his work was naieve, representational, and panders to the jingoistic patriot. (Usually with the Samuel Johnson quote 'Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel'.

I like to reply with the Heinlein quote: "A government supported artist is an incompetent whore."

Sigh...
